Broodmares
A selection of questions relating to mare registration and the studbook.
.
.
I have leased the mare for a year - do I have to register her?
No, you can simply record the foal under the unregistered parent/s category. If the mare has other
progeny you want to register, then it may be more worthwhile to "register" the mare so that the progeny
can all be applied for as having registered parents. Mind you, with the SPECIAL AMNESTY of $25
(plus GST) for all horses except stallions, it won't matter until next year.

Why should I register my mare?
Firstly, you would then be supporting the NZ Sport Horse breeding industry in its quest to formally
recognise pedigrees used in sport horse breeding in this country. Secondly, it is less expensive to record
the resulting progeny. Thirdly, your mare will be eligible for programs being developed under the banner of
the NZSHPB such as selective breeding programs, broodmare of the year awards etc. Last, but not least,
you need to be a mare owner or a stallion owner to be a full voting member of the NZSHPB.
