Selective Breeding Program
Dr Chris Rogers of Massey University is documenting a selective breeding program for NZ Sport
Horses that will be implemented over the next two years.

.
The NZSHPB is implementing a selective breeding program in conjunction with Massey University,
Palmerston North based on performance of horses in competition with Equestrian Sport New Zealand. At
this stage, the studbook will remain essentially open, but breeding stock which have been proven in
competition and/or by selection for type will have this noted in their pedigrees, and those of their
offspring. This recognition will include selective breeding accreditation from other related sport horse
breed societies in New Zealand and overseas.

The NZSHPB is also implementing specific breed improvement programs for eventers and jumpers which
will be based on suitable pedigrees and performance of mares, stallions and/or progeny at top level. In
particular, we want to document which of the older bloodlines have been successful in NZ before that
knowledge is lost to future generations.

Dr Chris Rogers is the committee member responsible for developing guidelines for selective breeding in
this register. You can contact him at Massey University - his email is on our CONTACT US page.
