(152.5cm) or over and meets the definition of a sport horse (above) will be recorded as a NZ Sport
Horse.
• A horse or foal whose primary birth registration is with another recognized Breed Society will be
identified as that registered breed (indicated by its prefix) within the Register.
• A horse or foal whose parentage can be documented for 3 generations but does NOT meet the definition
of a sport horse (above) will be recorded as a NZ Stationbred Horse or other as appropriate.
• A horse of unknown parentage will be recorded as NT (Not traced).
• Foals conceived by transported semen or embryo transplants will also be eligible for recording with
proper documentation and identification.
• Where a pedigree has not been verified with supporting documentation, the sire and/or dam’s name will

Horses Based Overseas
A mare or stallion born overseas who is at stud in New Zealand will be recorded as the breed on their birth
registration papers and recorded in the NZSH Stud Book. Their progeny will be eligible for registration as a
NZ Sport Horse. This includes progeny born in NZ using frozen semen from overseas based sires or
embryos from overseas mares.

Progeny of NZ parents born overseas are not eligible to be registered as a NZ Sport Horse at this stage
unless special application is made to the NZSHPB in writing.

Change Of Ownership And Replacement Certificates
Electronic copies of all certificates issued since October 2008 are on file with the NZ Sport Horse
Register. Earlier certificates are accessible in paper form. The original Certificate of Registration should
be retained by the breeder or the person first recording the horse. Changes of ownership are recorded
with the NZSHPB Registrar and an updated Copy of the Certificate of Registration issued to the new
owner. If the original Certificate of Registration is lost or damaged, a replacement can be issued for a
nominal fee by applying to the Registrar. Similarly, a replacement can be issued if further information on
a registered mare or registered stallion pedigree comes to hand which the owner may want recorded.
