Association for Breeders & Owners
The NZ Sport Horse Promotion Board Inc (NZSHPB) is an incorporated society that records
pedigree information for sport horses bred in New Zealand and promotes the breeding nationally
and internationally.
.
.
The society operates a fully computerized system tracking pedigree with performance with a view to
providing selective breeding information to breeders in NZ and overseas.

The NZ Sport Horse Promotion Board Inc. was formed in 1992 taking over the role of the NZ Sport Horse
Breeders & Owners Association Ltd. originally set up in 1987.

The Register was operated for the last 8 years through Equestrian Sport NZ on behalf of the NZ Sport
Horse Promotion Board Inc. but has recently been re-organised by a newly formed committee of
breeders, owners and riders so that it can play a more pro-active role in promoting the sport horse
breeding industry in New Zealand and overseas.

Objectives
The objects of the Society will be to ensure breeders of sport horses in New Zealand have the resources
needed to improve their breeding programmes and promote the sale of sport horses. In particular the
Society will :
• provide a register of sport horses in New Zealand as recorded by members and others
• promote the interests of New Zealand Sport Horses breeders through memberships and affiliations to
national and international organisations as appropriate
• develop selective breeding guidelines to improve the quality of horses being bred and produced under
saddle
• advocate on behalf of sport horse breeders regarding breeding, registration and performance issues with
individuals, government agencies, other breed organisations, educational institutions and sport
organisations including the Equestrian Sports New Zealand;
• protect the integrity of the sport horse breeding program in New Zealand in any way deemed necessary

• market New Zealand Sport Horses through advertising, trade displays, stallion parades, sponsorship,
sport horse sales and any other marketing activities; and
• carry out other activities consistent with the objects of the society

Equestrian Sport NZ
The NZSHPB will be working with ESNZ on sharing information in terms of pedigree and performance so
that selective breeding can be encouraged on the basis of performance in ESNZ shows. Longer term this
| is hoped to include digital exchange of data between both organizations.
. |
World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses
A major focus of the revitalization of the NZSHPB is to renew membership in the World Breeding
Federation for Sport Horses so that our horses competing at top level can earn points towards rankings
for eventers, jumpers and dressage horses. An application is being compiled for submission in early 2009.

Our catch cry is “You have to be in to win!” For further information see www.wbfsh.org
.
Universal Equine Life Number (UELN)
All sport horses recorded on the NZ Sport Horse Register as a NZ Sport Horse will be assigned a UELN
number to meet international protocols. This will be implemented in the database upgrade.

Selective Breeding Program
The NZSHPB is implementing a selective breeding program in conjunction with Massey University,
Palmerston North based on performance of horses in competition with Equestrian Sport New Zealand.
We will put more information up as it becomes available.
